I love bare walls (especially white), but without anything on the walls they end up looking bare. Walls with a tongue and groove paneled facade look clean, but not bare like plain painted walls. This way the walls have some visual interest, and you don't even have to clutter them with "things." Plus I love the simple cottage-y look of paneled walls.
