DIY Project

So I really like the look of multiple matching prints in a room....

Many designers do this look, but using authentic prints can be super pricey. Just a few prints can cost thousands, and I like the look of many more than just a few. Soooo.... I've discovered the New York Public Library Digital Gallery. It is a database of literally thousands of historical images like artwork, photographs, old postcards, illustrations from books and so on.

My advice is to search an image you like (I searched "botanical print") and scan the images to find a group of matching looks. I loved these monochromatic botanical sketches from 1906. Then, head to your local print shop and have them printed on high quality paper. You'll be so surprised at the quality of the prints!!

Oh, and one final tip: get cheap frames from Target or wherever, and then paint the frame, even if the paint is the same color as the original frame. The hand-painted brushstrokes make the frames look much more high end!

DIY...

This is my inspiration for my new DIY project...I've wanted a blackboard forever, but most of the ones I want are a little expensive and/or just not the right size for what I want. We will see how/when this happens, but here's to hoping it is successful!

I just walked into my apartment and I am SO EXCITED because my new subscription of Do It Yourself Magazine is here! It's like Domino meets Country Living meets a Lowe's catalog.  You kind of have to de-country some of the projects, but I am so excited about so many of these crafty ideas.  

Headboard project: The magazine claims this is an easy headboard.  It actually doesn't look too hard, just some foam board, MDF sheets and fabric.  The country part is that crazy fabric, which I'd just replace with a solid.

I love this idea for a beaded-board wall.  The beaded board comes in sheets and you can just change the direction to make the geometric pattern.  Again, a little too tween/country with that lime green.  I'd just do a cream or white.  

Even the directions to make that table and lamp are included in the article.  I am just thrilled with my new magazine.  Even though some of it is not my style, it definitely has some unique starting points for projects.  Wahoo!

Idea

I stole this photo from the Material Girls blog, which they took from Domino.  What a great, inexpensive art idea.  Just print huge numbers that go in order of the date.  Take them to Kinko's and get them bound, and each day roll back the number.  I can never remember what day it is anyway, so a huge reminder in the kitchen would be stylish and practical.  Love this idea and I'm going to do it on Monday.

Etsy.com is such a good resource for all things handmade. There are so many creative and talented people in the world. I like all this MadeByStella jewelry. You'd pay alot more for the similar jewelry in stores, and it wouldn't one-of-a-kind and probably not handmade.

Cool website

Reprodepot.com is a really fantastic resource for reproduction fabrics. I like to cover canvases in interesting fabric and use it as wall art, and this is definitely the best fabrics I've found yet (in stores and online). Although I haven't tried it, I think the ribbons and trim here would make cute belts if you just sewed on a D ring. It's all well-priced, too. Reprodepot is just a really cool and useful website.
